End of the Woodcock Season

The last two weeks of woodcock season were disappointing quiet for me.  Although the dogs searched hard the birds were not to be found.  It has been the worst season I've ever experienced. My journal shows we hunted 3 times a week for 6 weeks in 10 different coverts in 4 different counties and only managed to find a handful of birds. I must have definitely offended Diana the Hunting Goddess and this was her punishment. ☹️☹️  The only bright spot of the last week of the season was Bliss managed to point a hen pheasant that I dropped with my left barrel. The following are some pictures of the coverts I hunted that should have held a few birds but didn't.

An 8 day late grouse season may give me a chance to get out into the woods if the weather does not turn too nasty.

Very poor season for me as well. covers were empty at the start and just never could intercept the flights. New pup did point a couple of grouse though, so very excited about that. Finding a few quail in eastern VA and already thinking about a hunt out west next year. Have a good winter....we arent done yet with the grousing!

Sorry to hear that your woodcock season mirrored mine but happy to hear of your pup's grouse points. A pup's first points are sweet memories. No late grouse season here in Pa so my thoughts turn to pruning apple trees, obtaining scion for next springs grafting and dreaming of the spring woodcock flights.

Sorry to hear about your bust of a season. The early snows up north pushed the birds to their wintering grounds in my neck of the woods earlier than in the past. As a consequence, we've had a spectacular season here in SE GA. The unseasonable temps we've had in the last few days are expected to remain here until the end of this week (today is the 12th) and our season ends on the 20th. Nearby SC extends until month's end. Birds will be heading back your way before we know it. Gil
