A New BEE-ginning

After losing our bee hive to the severe winter Janet was anxious to get a new hive of bees started. Last week she purchased a package of bees from her mentor.

After spraying them with sugar water to discourage them from flying she removed the feeding can leaving a large hole in the top of the box. Then it was a simple matter of dumping them into the hive.

The queen came in a small plastic cage that has an escape hole plugged with sugar candy. The worker bees would eat away at the candy to let her escape the cage and enter the hive.

We're looking forward to spending the summer months watching these incredible creatures as they go about their business of establishing a productive hive.
